Hi.

Welcome to our blog.  We are documenting our motorcycle adventures throughout Central and South America. Hope you have a nice stay!

Sweden and Denmark

Sweden and Denmark

Included in this post are photos we took of some of the places we visited in Southern Sweden and Denmark. There are so many fabulous churches, museum, palaces, cities and towns that it is impossible to capture this region in a few pictures. Here is just a small sample of what we saw and experienced.

The Vasa Museum is home for one of the most interesting displays we have seen. The museum houses an absolutely enormous wooden ship named Vasa built around 1620. The Vasa was intended to accomodate over 400 crew members. And it is in remarkable condition due to the unusual circumstance of its sinking in Stockholm Harbor on its maiden voyage. As it sailed out of the harbor it listed to one side and sank in 30 meters of water. The waters of the cold Baltic sea preserved the wood in remarkable condition until 1960s when it was raised, restored and placed in the museum. To add insult to injury, the top of the main mast, which was around 100 feet tall, stuck out of the water to remind the shipbuilder that his creation had sunk before it left the harbor.

Hotels in Copenhagen were very expensive so we decided to rent an AirBNB in a small village named Fredensburg about an hour by train north of the city. As we were heading into Denmark, expecting to make the necessary connections, there was a power outage on the rail system and we were unable to make to get the train to Fredensberg. A couple overheard our conversation with the train agent and offered us a ride to Fredensberg. If they had not helped us out, we would have been stuck at a small rail station in the middle of nowhere for hours.

Once we got to Copenhagen we immediately noticed there were thousands bicycles all over the place including large areas like this one where bicycles could be temporarily stored. Later we learned that Copenhagen city leaders had made it their mission to get the citizens out of their cars to reduce pollution and congestion. As a result, there are more bikes than you can imagine in this city. There are also special bike lanes where they ride with their own traffic lights.

After touring museums all day I was getting a bit grumpy. But my spirits were revived with a cold one at the Bastard Cafe.

The Queen of Denmark was in Aarhus when we arrived. Apparently she traveled by boat, as her royal yacht was docked in the harbor. We hung around looking pitiful, but she never invited us on board.

One of the coolest things in Aarhus was the ARoS art museum. They had several exhibits that impressed us greatly. On top of the museum was this 360 degree walkway enclosed with colored glass.

Most of the art work in ARoS museum were experiential and could not me captured on a camera. You had to be in the space to get the full effect of the sights and sounds.

College graduations were taking place while we were in Aarhus. One of the things the common sights was a truck loads of graduating students driving around the city celebrating their accomplishments.

The morning we left Aarhus for Hamburg we visited another museum that presented the history of the peoples of northern Europe. Here a craftsman at the museum creating a mask of a Viking face.
