Cristo de las Noas
Visiting the Cristo de las Noas statue, which is perched on a hilltop overlooking the city of Torreón, was one of the sites several people recommended we see. The overall complex is modeled after various Christian structures that exist in the Holy Land with the centerpiece of the complex being a statue of Jesus that is over 21 meters high. Ofelia and her daughter Kenya, our CouchSurfing hostesses for our second night in Torreón, were kind enough to take us on a guided tour of the complex. Ofelia recommended we head up the complex in the early evening so we could experience the views and the site before, during and after sunset.
As we arrived at the complex the mountains in the distance were just starting to glow in the red-orange of the evening light. As we toured the complex we visited the many alcoves, grottos and chambers that had been constructed with much care. Once the sun was down the glowing white statue of Jesus became the dominant focus of the hill top. With his outstretched arms the statue of Jesus offered protection to the people of Torreón in the valley below.
After dinner, Kenya gave Omar and me a beautiful picture she recently drew. We promised to carry it with us on our journey through South America and share it with the other children we meet along the way.
Thanks to Ofelia and Kenya for making our stay in Torreon so enjoyable. They were great!
